STOMACH ACID, ANTACIDS, AND GAS

Those of you who have been diagnosed as having too much stomach acid and are on antacids but who still experience gas either in the epigastric area (the area at the top of the sternum) with or without belching or in the lower bowel area (that part of the so-called stomach area below the umbilicus) associated either with or without flatus) should reconsider their taking of antacids. Please read my Blog dated 10/7/2007 on Low Stomach Acid (Hypochlorhydria).

Most individuals who experience symptoms which are interpreted as hyper acidity (too much stomach acid) actually are experiencing the symptoms of insufficient acid. It may be hard to believe, but it is true. Taking antacids is the wrong thing to do.

GAS (BELCHING AND FLATUS), ABDOMINAL DISTENSION, ACID REFLUX

Previously I wrote two Blogs on related subjects: 10/7/07 on Low Stomach Acid (hypochlorhydria) and 2/14/08 on Medical Misinformation. I would like to share a letter I received today from frankieloo: “this was very helpful!! i'm in my mid-30's and have noticed that i've become quite "gaseous" in the past couple years (worse this year). almost everything i eat gives me gas. i have thought about going to a gastro doc, but figured the gas was part of getting older and the "wear & tear" over the years of spicy food, rich food, etc. i've started to carry around antacids with me, but after reading this i'll need to stop! perhaps i'll move forward with that gastro appt and get tested...”

I responded at the 10/7/07 Blog: “If frankieloo gets this comment, email me at: drtauraso@drtauraso.com and I will give you specific instructions on how to get rid of your gas.”

Our Blog is set up so we can post our responses at the original posting date for the Blog. In case frankieloo did not read my response, I am publishing it here.

I will reiterate that the most common cause of abdominal gas, whether it be belching or flatus is the lack of stomach acid, a condition called hypochlorhydria. I refer current readers to the Blog posted 10/07/07 for a more detailed discussion. The taking of any form of antacids is the worst thing one can do. I cannot emphasize this too much.
So my message to frankieloo is to contact me directly at: drtauraso@drtauraso.com for further personal instructions. I am afraid to say that most conventional gastro-enterologists are unaware of the proper treatment of this condition. I kid you not.
